Steven Pressfield has a series of videos about war in Afghanistan, as he says, ancient and modern.

By the way, 'Gates of Fire' rocks.

I have a bit more appreciation (intellectually at least) for this
Michael Yon post about the applicability of tracking since I recently finished reading
The SAS Guide To Tracking.
Even though our stakes in airsoft are decided by mere ballistic plastic I believe that tracking and observation should be an important part of the game. Engage…

I'd like to think of Firefight! as a poor man's Tactical Conflict Assessment Framework (TCAF). ;)

The
operator card has been updated to reflect the latest state of the rules including weapon maintenance and the ammo subsystem up for play testing.
I tried to keep everything on one side of the card but things started to get too crammed thus diminishing the card's overall usefulness.
There are now two files; front and back. I split the op card sheet out to two separate files because printing consecutive pages from the sa…

This is written in developer-speak so it's not written in stone and isn't exactly pretty and it is known that it will take some tweaking to be show ready. Of course any feedback is much appreciated.
A weapon is always considered to be in one of three ammunition states:
High: The operator using the weapon can use as many physical magazines and types as he wishes. And he may dip into his "out of game" BB supp…

Just wanted to let everyone know that the Operator Card has been updated to reflect the latest state of Firefight!

For Solus there will probably be a back side to the card to make tracking things easier.

I've been tinkering with the site and the Firefight! logo. The graphics at the top are a work in progress as I tinker with ideas.

Just wanted to stop in and and mention that "disease/virulent elements" is all but wrapped up and will soon be ready to go for the Solus campaign. We're on schedule to finish disease this weekend.
Here's the rundown on the
disease card. It's a tri-fold card which means that a lot of information can be packed onto it allowing the unveiling of information as things unfold.
On the front fo…

I just want to pop in and mention that we've got a working title for the next Firefight! campaign.
Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the center cannot hold
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed ...

For the last week I've been sifting through a little over 2,000 pictures that Matt has given and allowed us to use in the Firefight! manual. (I have a new found love for iPhoto)
The pictures are of his and his unit's efforts in Iraq so needless to say that they're outstanding. Each time I make a new pass I fine "just one more" that I think I can squeeze in. Just wait till you see the Iraqi Cowboy.

I just wanted to say that we're still on the move and to say that we learned a lot from the last Joe game. There were a lot of eyes on the system and a lot of questions were asked. And that's a good thing.
I just finished up refining and clarifying the language surrounding burning Fate Points and acquiring new Edges.
One suggestion that came out of player prep for the Joe game was to include examples in the book. Examples are on the way but they'll be available here on the site as PDFs instead…

For a while now I've been looking for new footwear for airsoft and other outdoor activities. I started playing airsoft in black Altama boots. Fit wasn't bad but they suffered in the traction department and after a while the sides started to sag becoming uncomfortable around the ankle area.
Last year I purchased a pair of Wellco tan GI boots. Initially, I was thrilled because the ankle area was nylon canvas and did not/could not rub. Also, traction was much, much better. No longer was I pawing m…

Last weekend we playtested the new toolkit framework for Medical kits. It worked beautifully. I played as a "Jack of All Trades" medic so I got to see how it worked from the Operator side of things. Today we finished the toolkit write-up and it is now included in the book.
I also want to note that we've got a professional editor with live-action gaming experience lined up to look at Firefight! Campaign before going to print. This is a huge boon.
Next up: Disease.
Just got feedback from…

Just to let you all know that we're still chugging along, we've just finished back-porting the new general toolkit concept into medical treatment. The biggest impact is on how medical kits are used in the game.
Under the old system medical kits were used up immediately when used as part of a failed medical test. Now, medical kits provide Smarts (1-3) specific to medical treatment. Once the kit's Smarts are all used up the kit is used up.
This approach gives a bit more flexibility in play and i…

We've been quiet recently but it's because we've been working hard on the Firefight! rulebook.
We're expanding the idea of toolkits for the game. The general gist that we arrived at is that a toolkit provides X number of Smarts that may be used to retry a failed skill test.
A bit of playtesting is in order to see if this can be back-ported into the use of medical kits. I want to make sure that there aren't too many exceptions in the rules to be memorized.

With the core of Firefight! solidified we've moved on to bringing in all the things that help round out the game.
Appendix B will include subjects such as disease and radiation and how to handle them in the game. These things help make events less about 'run and gun' and more about worrying about an actual in-game environment.
These things will be helpful for post apocalyptic settings or even more realistic modern battlefield games. Just ask anyone who island hopped all the way to Okinawa or t…
